Happy St Andrew’s Day

Brother of Simon Peter, Andrew was one of the 12 apostles of Jesus and was also a fisherman.

St. Andrew was known for being one of Jesus’ first followers and he was martyred by crucifixion on an X-shaped cross which is represented on our national blue and white flag – known as the Saltire.  (Credit: Paul Murphy, Motherwell)

As well as being the patron saint of Scotland, Andrew is patron saint to other countries, including Ukraine, Barbados and Romania.

He is the patron saint of Amalfi in Italy. His relics were brought there from Constantinople in 1208.  The cathedral (duomo) in the centre of Amalfi is dedicated to St Andrew.  The people of Amalfi celebrate St Andrew on, not only 30th November but also the 27th June.
